After 2 years of development, mProjector 4 is out the door, Windows version has been totally rewritten, and we now support Flash 8, 9, 10, ActionScript 2 ActionScript 3 and Flex 3 - including debugging inside Flex. mProjector is taking Flash Application development to a new level with this release.

For those of you with a handbag fetish Hermès have posted a delicious screensaver of flying handbags, also along for the ride is a clock screensaver featuring a Hermès watch and some sort of leather book holders.. It was tricky finding these. Go to their site and click the "Travel the world of Hermès" link, this opens a window with an orange nav bar, search for screen saver and you should find them. Created with Screentime for Flash and available for Mac and Windows

Pineapple Express Screensaver

Well what can we say about this one, it's an exploding pineapple... which I guess is better than an exploding Lemon.

I have not seen the movie, but this seems like a missed opportunity to make something a bit more compelling with all the footage they must have...

Polar Clock, this is oddly compelling

Our friends over at pixelbreaker have made a really creative screensaver clock using Screentime for Flash. It uses polar diagrams on steroids to display the time using a set of concentric rings, inner-most for year, outermost for seconds. You can download it from here, there is also a nice animated preview on the page.

This one was hard for me to spot on their page there is a grid of downloads, lots of wallpaper, but tucked in there is a little gem of a screensaver for caddy lovers, it is interactive and allows you to pan around the front of the car, while outside day turns to night. August sees new versions of Screentime for Flash and mProjector

We have improved performance (again..) especially with compute intensive transitions like pageflip and bitmap panning, in most cased these look really smooth now.

mProjector Mac adds in a few more of the Windows APIs including system tray, which pops an icon menu into the menubar.

At long last we bring organic anti-aliased flash shaped windows to Mac OS X!!!

Version 3 is major update in many ways, but the mac flash windows is the biggest, on Windows we now also support Browser embedding. mProjector V3 is also now built with mProjector. As far as I know we are the only Flash to Application tool that uses itself to build itself. I think that says it all really, if its good enough for you to build apps, should it be good enough for us? In the case of mProjector, the answer is definitely YES!!!!

Screentime for Flash 3.2.3 Released

Well we finally got there, a good solid Universal Mac release of Screentime. this took a suprisingly long time due to the complications of the intel transition and a new Flash Player. We rewrote the http backend TWICE!!! but I think it is the better for it. There are several nice new commands that let you determine if you swf is running in setting mode, preview or as a screen saver; and if it is running as a screen saver, which monitor (ir you are lucky enough to have more than one) that is it playing on. This opens up a world of possibilities for playback.

Screentime for Flash 3.2 release candidate available

Its hard to believe how long this has taken, but we now have a release candidate of Screentime for Flash that supports Mac OS X 10.2 -> intel -

It also adds a nice new API so your swf can determine if it is running in Preview Mode, as the Configure SWF or in the case of multiple monitor systems, which monitor it is running on.

The transition to Intel has invoked a rewrite of the http backend, which *should* be considerably more efficient now.

Yes its been awful quiet here in blogland.. but with good reason.. I've had my head down working on a new version of mProjector.

R6 started out as a few bug fixes, then... well we added a few things

Integration into Flash - you can now compile and preview you app from within Flash

Embedded Media, there are 2 new API to embed content inside Flash or in its own window, supported types include html, quicktime and pdf.

Auto update, mProjector will now check to see if you are using the latest version, and download and install it if you don't (well that's the theory anyway)

Memory - much better memory management

And thank goodness. Big surprise this as couple of weeks later than predicted, but we did fix a lot of bugs and added some API as well as chance some performance handling characteristics... whew what a mouthful

What's New in Version 2.0r5

New APIS

mApplication.getSpecialFolder("TRASH") -- returns path to trash can
mApplication.deleteSelf() -- deletes the app
mApplication.getMyPath() -- return the whole path including the filename of the application
mWindow.setFrameRate() -- now implemented, allows to control the performance and resources of your app.
mApplication.enableCaching() -- previously documented but not implemented

Bugs Fixed

GetWindows and GetWindowRect now return more accurate results
The Shift key works (again)
Arrow Keys work (again)
ChooseFolder works (again)
Performance in the background has been improved

Other Stuff
Authorization - The theory behind this is you can easily update to new versions, by simply downloading them from our website. Unfortunately during our code revision for Intel compatibility a bug in the authorization scheme came to light so the code for 2.0.2 will NOT work.

Caching - Prior to version 2.0r5 caching by default was ON this caused a lot of problems for people wanting getting fresh data. The default is now OFF. Call mApplication.enableCaching(true) to enable the cache. Cache setting are global to the application and all windows. Caches are currently stored in /home/Library/preferences/com.screentime.caches

Performance - prior versions automatically throttled back the CPU usage of windows when they were not foremost. 2.0r5 does not, so performance stays the same in the background. Call mWindow.setFrameRate to reduce (or increase) performance - Generally this is a good idea if you are being switched to background or not doing much in your flash.

We have done a lot of work on Intel compatibility which also helped optimize existing code, the quality of the intel playback engine is not quite ready for prime time, but when it is we will be ready.

Well, mProjector compiles and runs quite well native on the Intel Mac platform, but the Flash Player for Intel is r17 ( everyone else get r22) and 17 seems a LOT buggier and crashes. So for the time being mProjector will continue to run "non-native" on the Intel Macs. Performance is actually surprisingly good, although lauch times are noticeably slower.

As for screen savers, well we have no choice, 3.2 of Screentime for Flash will incluse native Intel support, since that is the only screen savers can run on that platform.

There you have it..

The current version of Screentime for Flash (3.1) does not produce intel mac compatible screen savers - but the good news is that they are up and running here. The interesting part is gluing the intel and ppc code together into one happy installer. All things being equal there should be an intel compatible update out in a few days.

Browser Embedding and Opening Non Flash Windows

Undocumented - and not really pounded on test wise -

Version 2.0.2 (Mac) has a secret version of createWindow

Pass a file path (to a file othe than a swf) or a url to createWindow and it will open a new window and render the content - pretty much anything Safari can render will work, hml, quicktime, pdf and more.. pretty cool

Ok it gets cooler

set the owned by parent flag to true and it will "embed" the broser into your flash window.

parameters all make sense except you set the size by using the shapeFilename field and using a format like this {500,500)

Well, I'm going to have another crack at the Tech blog thing.

Just wrapped up mProjector 2.0.2

Fixes the requisite number of obscure bugs, and introduce one fun new API allowing you change the screen resolution to 800*600 - Flash full screen performance freaks will really like this one. We also added a chooseFiles call, so you can now allow users to select more than one file at a time.

Easter Egg on the Mac - pass a file type of DiR and you can choose multiple folders.

Also new is RunAppleScript actually returning good values when called sync.

The builder also allows you to reload a swf into RAM if it has changed on disk
And my personal favorite, a "Launch after Build" option.

Debugging mProjector

Just got off the phone with a customer - we learn important stuff on these calls, especially what is confusing sometimes.

With mProjector on Mac OS X you must install the mProjector component and drag it onto your fla, the first frame is a good spot. And here's the real trick - commands are not available until the second frame, since they are intialized in the first frame

then call mApplication.enableAutoTrace(true) to denable debugging
then call mApplication.trace("a trace string") to send some info to the Console

The console?

yeah its an app that is already on you mac.

Go to /Application/Utilities and there lies Console. open it up and watch your strings fly by..
